Posted on: 02/28/2018

Marcello Conner, son of Danielle Conner of Bradford wears a red hat in the nursery at BRMC. The hats were made by volunteers to promote heart disease during February’s Heart Month.

To commemorate Heart Month this month, Bradford Regional Medical Center’s obstetrics and maternity unit participated in the Little Hats, Big Hearts™ program.

The American Heart Association, in conjunction with the Children’s Heart Foundation, sponsors the national event to honor babies, moms and heart healthy lives. Babies born at BRMC during February were given red hats made my local volunteers to promote heart disease awareness.

This was the first year BRMC participated in the event. Beth Price, clinical educator, BRMC, learned about the event through the AHA. “Being a knitter, I thought this was a great project, crafting for a healthy heart.”

According to Judi Scott, RN, OB nurse manager, 13 hats were given to new moms and their newborns this month. She said new parents and visitors loved the hats which gave staff the opportunity to educate about congenital heart awareness.

Little Hats, Big Hearts started in February 2014 in Chicago where 300 hats were collected. It has now expanded to more than 40 states. The organization collected 200,000 hats to be distributed during the month to empower moms to live heart healthy lives and help their children do the same.
